I traveled deep into the buried regions of the mind. I discovered that in addition to being, consciously, a loving mother and respectable citizen, I was, unconsciously, a murderess, a pervert, a cannibal, a sadist and a masochist.

–Constance A Newland (Themla Moss), 1962

having been there always

At some time in the middle of the twentieth century, upon an afternoon in the summer, we are sitting around a table on the terrace, eating dark homemade bread and drinking white wine. And yet we seem to have been there forever, for the people with me are no longer the humdrum and harassed little personalities with names, addresses, and social security numbers, the specifically dated mortals we are all pretending to be. They appear rather as immortal archetypes of themselves without, however, losing their humanity. (Alan Watts)

Was that a vision? What happened to me?

"Had a transcendental storm of colour visions today in the bus going to Marseilles. We ran though a long avenue of trees and I close my eyes against the setting sun. An overwhelming flood of intensely bright colours exploded behind my eyelids: a multi-dimensional kaleidoscope whirling out through space. I was swept out of time. I was out in a world of infinite number. The vision stopped abruptly as we left the trees. Was that a vision? What happened to me?" (Brion Gysin, 1958)

I imagined myself as a giant penis launching off from the earth like a spaceship. (Cary Grant, 1962)
"I seemed to be in a world of healthy, chubby little babies' legs and diapers, and smeared in blood, a sort of general menstrual activity taking place. It did not repel me as such thoughts used to." (Cary Grant, 1962)
